Hello there, my name is Jen!
I was born and raised in Thunder Bay and am of mixed settler origin. I joined the helping profession almost a decade ago as I've always had a passion for mental health. I’ve had a variety of roles from Crisis Response Worker to Contract Lecturer, and am now a Psychotherapist & Office Supervisor at Dorset Pier Mental Health!
My primary focus in my practice has been supporting folks who have experience with trauma, intimate partner violence, and anxiety. Giving folks a comfortable, authentic space to explore this is essential to my approach. As someone with their own trauma history, I know how difficult it can be to be vulnerable and reach out for help. Some of the most important values both to me personally and professionally are integrity and compassion. I aim to make our sessions as comfortable for you as possible while tailoring my approach to fit your needs. I will work at your pace while using evidence-based practices to provide you the tools to make positive changes in your life.
I am trained in and have experience with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), Prolonged Exposure for Post-traumatic stress disorder (PE for PTSD), Trauma focused cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT), and Gottman Couples Method (Level 2). I am recently exploring Internal Family Systems (IFS) and look forward to incorporating it into my practice. If you're not familiar with these acronyms or terms, they essentially mean that I am able to help you better recognize and challenge negative thoughts, manage emotions, tolerate distress, improve relationships, be more present in the moment, and decrease trauma symptoms. These therapy modalities are helpful for folks with depression, anxiety, PTSD, BPD, or life stress in general.
I have experience with and am comfortable working with adults, youth (children and adolescents), families, and couples. I have worked a lot with trauma survivors and folks struggling with self-esteem, anxiety, depression, anger, relationship difficulties and stress. As a pansexual, demi-girl, I consider myself a member and ally of the 2SLGTBQ+ community. I work from an intersectional, trauma-informed and harm reduction lens. Outside of the office, I enjoy hiking, running, knitting, and board games with pals.
If any of this sounds helpful for you, I'd be more than happy to meet with you!
